Is AI art actually art?
Yes, it is. Before you disagree in the comments give the whole thing a read.
Through the ages, the greatest of artists have been scrutinized and cast aside by none other than the artists themselves.
Let us take the example of the Fauvism movement for example. Change is often met with refutation. Fauvism was a very drastic departure from the traditional practice of fine arts. The name of the movement in its literal sense stands for ‘Wild Beasts’ deriving from the renowned art critic, Louis Vauxcelles’ words "Donatello chez les fauves" (Donatello among wild beasts) seeing a Quattrocento-style sculpture displayed in the same room as eye-popping paintings by Henry Matisse, André Derainet al. They were rejected exhibitions multiple times and were often seen as a ragtag group of painters of rebellious nature lacking artistic skill.
Pablo Picasso, a household staple at this point also faced rejection and resistance. Picasso and Georges Braque’s Cubist art pieces collected harsh criticism and
incomprehension. No buyers/patrons were ready to support their groundbreaking work.
Examples are far and widely available. People despise what they do not understand.
Strong art evokes strong emotions and the strongest emotion of them all is fear and hatred. AI art has been received with a lot of emotions. Fear of being replaced by artists. Hatred for the ethical values broken by being trained on art without present and past artist’s knowledge or consent.
Not sure if making AI art makes you an artist or not (completely a separate discussion) but AI art is art true to its meaning.
